A business VoIP phone system makes and receives calls over an internet connection rather than a traditional analogue or ISDN telephone line. It can provide business features such as call queues, auto attendants, call recording, voicemail-to-email, mobile and desktop apps, and multiple office locations under one phone system.
Yes. In most cases, an existing UK business telephone number can be transferred, or ported, to a VoIP service. This includes many existing 01, 02 and 03 numbers. Fidelis Plus manages the number porting process and can arrange temporary call routing where appropriate to minimise disruption during migration.
The time required depends on the type of number, current provider and complexity of the existing service. A straightforward single-number port can often be completed within a few weeks, while multi-line or more complex migrations can take longer. Your existing service should normally remain operational until the agreed migration date.
VoIP depends on an internet connection, but calls do not necessarily have to stop if your main broadband fails. A business can use 4G or 5G backup connectivity, automatic call forwarding, mobile applications or disaster-recovery routing to maintain communications during an internet outage.
Yes. VoIP can operate over a suitable 4G or 5G connection provided the connection has sufficient bandwidth, low latency and consistent signal quality. Mobile connectivity can be used as either the primary connection for some sites or as automatic backup when the main broadband or leased line fails.
A typical VoIP call generally requires around 100 Kbps of bandwidth in each direction, although the exact requirement varies depending on the codec and service configuration. Connection quality, latency, jitter and packet loss are also important, particularly where several simultaneous calls share the same broadband connection.
Yes. VoIP can work particularly well for small businesses because users can have business numbers, call handling features and mobile or desktop applications without installing a traditional telephone system on site. Services can normally be expanded as the business grows by adding additional users, numbers or locations.
The UK’s traditional PSTN telephone network is due to be retired on 31 January 2027. Businesses still using analogue telephone services should review not only their phone lines but also equipment such as alarms, payment terminals, lift phones and other devices that may depend on traditional telephone lines.
